E. Remington & Sons Exhibit

           E. Remington's company was America's earliest gun manufacturer.  It was started in 1816 at Ilion Gulf, New York by Eliphalet Remington (       -1828).    His son Eliphalet Remington II (1793-1861) continued the company as E Remington & Sons. The sons were Philo (     -1889, Samuel (     -1882),  and Eliphalet III (     -1924).  The E. Remington company grew and many of its pre-cartridge guns were used in the Civil War.  Loads for Remington's guns are shown on this exhibit, but not necessarily made by E. Remington.  E. Remington became incorporated in 1865. The company supplied guns to several European nations.  E Remington & Sons operated until 1886 when the firm was in receivership, and then bankrupt in 1888.

Post Civil War era saw inventions of cartridges. A cartridge is a case, primer, powder and bullet assembled into one unit.  One report says that E. Remington ammunition manufacturing began in 1870. Cartridges marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS" in raised letters are very early manufacture.  Other E. Remington cartridges bear no head stamp, but their bevel rim, or oval head-face identify them.  This exhibit includes examples of original "E. REMINGTON & SONS" cartridges,  boxes, and an original company bullet pack.

Partners Hartley and Graham along with Winchester purchased E. Remington & Sons in 1888.   Winchester  sold  his  assets of  the E. Remington & Sons to Hartley and Graham in 1896, and they continued the business as Remington Arms Co. until 1902 when they combined it with their Union Metallic Cartridge Co. to form Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (REM-UMC).  The Formal announcement was not made until circa 1912.
